Hello,

I am a Colorado elk hunter. I live in the old 1880s mining town of Crestone, Colorado. I live at the elevation of 8500 ft., on a mountainside that is full of elk. I live in the middle of great elk hunting country. I observe the elk. I observe the hunters. I have learned the art of elk hunting by my own trial-and-error, from observing the habits and patterns of other hunters, and by observing the daily movement patterns and living habits of the elk.

So I have put together all of this wisdom about elk hunting in Colorado into a concise, clearly explained book which you can download off of this website. Whether you are a first-time, out-of-state elk hunter, or whether you have grown up hunting elk, you will find this book interesting and informative.

In the book I discuss:

  • The situation of the novice, first-time elk hunter. Learn elk hunting quickly.
  • The daily patterns and living habits of elk. Learn their four basic needs.
  • Colorado's complicated elk hunting regulations, and how to understand them.
  • Common mistakes made by many elk hunters.
  • The best elk rifle. There are several. The best elk cartridges and loads.
  • A simple method to properly sight in your rifle. Save ammo and time.
  • All you need to know about Elk Bugling. How to best use your binoculars.
  • Learn how to track elk. Tracking will give you the edge over other hunters.
  • How to properly care for the kill. How to not lose your meat.
  • Should you use outfitters? How you can best use drop camp outfitters.
  • The Elk Rut and how to use it. The truth about the "herd bull".
  • The Spirituality of Elk Hunting. "Zen Buddhism" as an elk hunter.
  • Be the best Elk Hunter you can be. What Elk Hunting is really all about.

Best of luck to you in your elk hunting experiences.

Matt

Excerpts from the book:

"Elk hunting is about being in the mountains. It is about enjoying the outdoors. It is about the "total experience" of getting out in the woods, and being in touch with nature. The warmth of the mid-morning sun on a snow covered mountain slope, the awesome beauty of a hidden forest meadow, a rushing mountain stream, the stillness of the deep forest, all of this is part of elk hunting. All will affect you deeply."

"For thousands of years our ancestors lived in the forests. Maybe there is still something within us that yearns for this return to nature. The mountains of Colorado are a wondrous place, full of history and lore. You will become part of it. When your elk hunting season ends, and you leave the mountains, you will take part of them back home with you. You will return a changed and better person."

"Will you get an elk each year? Probably not. But if you are on your way to becoming a good elk hunter, you will know that this is not important. What is important is that you are a good hunter, a master of the sport. You will learn to love the elk. This magnificent animal was perhaps placed here by the Creator to challenge us, to get us out there in the wilderness, to give us a chance to discover things about ourselves that we would not otherwise discover."

"If it was easy to bag an elk each year, many of us wouldn't bother."
